SLPS Magnet School Open House

The annual Magnet School Open House is coming up on Saturday, September 17 from 11am–3pm. Tour guides are needed! Please consider donating an hour or two of your time to show prospective families around our school. This is an exciting time for them, as I’m sure you remember. Please email me directly to volunteer: boehlje@sbcglobal.net, and indicate what time frame works best for you. Thank you!!

Wilkie Market – Sept. 24

The Wilkinson ECC PTO will be hosting a flea market this year on September 24 in the school parking lot. We are currently looking for volunteers and vendors. We are having this market to raise money for playground equipment (I think Ms. Wilson has her eye on some trikes) and to raise our profile in the neighborhood.

Parking spaces are available to vendors ($15 for one and $20 for two). This is a great opportunity for people that have been thinking about hosting a garage sale but are worried they won’t get enough people. We will do all the advertising and we have plenty of parking and bathrooms. We are open to all kinds of vendors.

We need help with advertising and event volunteers. We will be recruiting at the back to school picnic on Thursday – great way to get involved with the Wilkie Community.
Anyone interested in a space can email wilkiemarket@gmail.com

Pack 214 Recruiting Tiger Cubs for 2011-2012 School Year

Dear Parents of Kindergarten (soon to be 1st-grade) boys,

As your son finishes kindergarten and you ease into summer, Pack 214 invites you to do some thinking about being involved with Cub Scouts next year.

WHY CUB SCOUTING? WHAT IS CUB SCOUTING?
SCOUTING IS AN AID TO PARENTS.

As a parent, you want your son to grow up to be a self-reliant, dependable, and caring individual. Scouting has these same goals in
mind for him. Since 1910, Scouting has been weaving lifetime values into fun and educational activities designed to assist parents in strengthening character, good citizenship, and physical fitness in youth. Scouting teaches “family values.” We know that boys do not join Scouting just to get their character built; boys join because it is fun.

SCOUTING IS FUN WITH A PURPOSE!

Cub Scouting provides a positive way for parent and son to grow closer together and encourages you to spend quality time together. The family-centered program encourages closeness to family and will give you an opportunity to participate in activities with your son that you normally couldn’t do.

Cub Scouting is made up of four distinct age groups of boys, each with a program tailored to their age-specific needs. TIGER CUBS is for boys in the first grade. It is a year-round family- and home-centered program that encourages ethical decision-making skills for boys.

DEN LEADERSHIP

Perhaps the most important, and rewarding, position in Cub Scouting is that of Den Leader. This person, and hopefully an assistant, plan and conduct the weekly den meetings. They have the right to expect all the parents of the boys in the den to lend a hand. A Den cannot exist without a Den Leader. Sadly, if a Den Leader is not available (that is, no adult is willing to take on the responsibility), the Pack Committee may be forced to deny membership to a group of boys. Similarly, a Den Leader has every right to limit the number of boys in his/her Den in order to effectively lead the boys. Den Leaders have taken the time to be trained in their role, regularly attend monthly committee meetings, and provide key leadership that can make or break a boy’s Cub Scout experience.

Pack 214 is chartered to the Kennard Classical Junior Academy PTO, but we also include dens from Wilkinson ECC and some other area schools. It is important to understand, however, that in order to have a Wilkinson Tiger Cubs den next year, it is necessary for there to be at least one (preferably 2 or 3) Wilkinson Den Leaders. If you would like more information about becoming a den leader or would like to ask a question about Cub Scouts, please email either Kate Sathi, the Pack 214 Committee Chair, or Kara Buckeridge, the Kennard Tiger Cubs Den Leader for the 2010-2011 school year. Please be assured, there is no previous experience necessary. The Greater St. Louis Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America will give you the necessary training, and we will give you all of the support and help you need. Please consider giving some of your time. The boys will be grateful of it for the rest of their lives, and you will not regret it!
